Hardening

Hardening is the process of heating a metal above a critical temperature and then quickly quenching it from that temperature, either in water or spray. Tempering

Tempering is a heat treatment process done after hardening to relieve the internal stresses and reduce the brittleness caused by the hardening process. The hardened metal is heated again to a secondary heat treatment temperature, but the temperature is lower than the hardening temperature. After heating, the metal is cooled again, slowly this time, compared to the fast cooling process during hardening. The tempered metal becomes less brittle, and its strength is maintained. It is used to stabilize metals, especially those exposed to tension.

 

Annealing

Annealing is a heat treatment process that is done to enhance the ductility of a metal by reducing its hardness. The metal is heated to a specific temperature beyond its critical point to simplify its internal structure, rendering it easier to work with. After heating, the metal is slowly cooled down, often in the absence of air. Annealing makes the metal softer and more malleable, allowing for easy bending and cutting when making parts like springs, wires, and tubes. Annealed metals are also easier to machine, making them popular in mass production applications.
